Custom Target Date Funds
Effective April 18, 2017, the County will transition from the existing T. Rowe Price Target Date Funds to new Target Date Funds customized for the County of San Diego.
Why the change?
We take great pride in selecting quality funds we think best represent the industry at large and the needs of County participants. That is why we created the new series of Target Date Funds built from the funds in our core investment menu.
Because we and our investment consultant are rigorous in our continual review of the Program’s available funds, building the new Target Date Funds using our core investment options allows us greater control and flexibility, including the ability to make changes to an underlying fund when warranted.
No action is required on your part
- If you are currently enrolled in a T. Rowe Price Target Date Fund, your assets will transfer to the new fund with the same year in the fund name, with the exception of assets in the T. Rowe Price Retirement Balanced Fund. Assets in this fund will transfer to the most conservative Target Date Fund in the series. Glide paths for the replacement Target Date Funds are substantially similar to the T. Rowe Price Target Date Fund but utilize funds from the core fund lineup.
Glide path refers to the asset allocation mix between equity and fixed income investments which are different for each target date fund. Each fund’s allocation is based on the number of years to the target date. The year of the County’s target date fund corresponds to the year in which you will turn age 65.
- If you are currently enrolled in a T. Rowe Price Target Date Fund and do not wish your assets to transfer to the new Target Date Fund, please log in to your account by April 17, 2017 to reallocate your contributions using the existing fund lineup. Of course, you are welcome to make adjustments to your fund selections at any time.
Target Date Fund Fact Sheets
Target date funds are designed for people who plan to retire during or near a specific year. These funds use a strategy that automatically shifts from riskier investments to a higher percentage of more conservative investments over time in order to better protect investors as they approach retirement. In addition to a target date fund’s fees, investors in the fund pay a proportionate share of the expenses of its underlying funds. There is no guarantee that a target date fund will achieve its objectives or provide enough retirement income at or through retirement.
While target date funds are designed to provide investors with a prudent and diversified allocation of their investment assets, participants should continue to periodically monitor them, and make adjustments as investing prudence and long-term goals suggest.
